Methods for land reclamation using soft soil and waste  

The NTU-JTC Industrial Infrastructure Innovation Centre organised its second seminar on Thursday, 2nd August 2012.  The speaker, Dr Chu Jian was invited to give a seminar on Methods for land reclamation using soft soil and waste.  Various topics were covered including land reclamation using soft or dredged soil, suggested reclamation methods and soil improvement procedures for using soft soil for large scale land reclamation.  The speaker also presented an innovative method of using waste material on a land reclamation project. The method can resolve the shortage of land reclamation materials in Singapore.

Dr Chu Jian has worked for CEE, NTU, for nearly 20 years and is one of the leading researchers in soil properties, soil improvement and land reclamation. He has been a keynote or invited speaker on the above topics at many international conferences including the State-of-the-Art Reporter at the 17th International Conference for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering in Alexandria in 2009. His other professional roles include Chairman of the ISSMGE Technical Committee TC39 on Geotechnical Engineering for Coastal Disaster Mitigation and Rehabilitation from 2005 to 2010, Executive Member of another ISSMGE Technical Committee TC211 on Ground Improvement since 2005, the Vice-President of Geotechnical Society of Singapore from 2010 to 2011, Co-Editor, Associate Editor and Member of Editorial Board for 7 international journals. He also has a strong link to industries through conducting industry supported projects and providing consulting services to government agencies and industries in Singapore and overseas. He received the R.M. Quigley Award for publishing the best paper in the Canadian Geotechnical Journal in 2003.



The seminar was well attended with more than 100 participants from NTU and various industrial partners, including CSC Holdings, BMT Asia Pacific, Keller Foundations (S E Asia), Kiso-Jiban Singapore, Penta Ocean Construction, Surbana International Consultants, The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, Defence Science and Technology Agency and JTC Corporation. 


The Seminar ended with NTU-JTC I3C’s Co-Director, Dr Lu Ming presenting a token of appreciation to Dr Chu Jian.
